Butterfly Bash Offers Free Family Fun in Chandler, Arizona |
Nature walks and hands-on activities bring a morning of discovery to Veterans Oasis Park |

You do not need a long drive or an expensive ticket to give the kids a morning of outdoor discovery.
The Dragonfly & Butterfly Bash returns to Chandler Nature Center and Veterans Oasis Park on Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The free event includes hands-on crafts, games, guided nature walks, and giveaways.
With a mix of activities rather than one long performance, you can plan an outing around your family's attention span and interests.
Small discoveries, close to home
The event location is 4050 East Chandler Heights Road.
Guided nature walks are approximately 20 minutes long and use easy terrain.
That can be a manageable starting point for a child who is curious about the outdoors but not ready for a lengthy hike.
Ask children to look for a color, shape, or movement they have not noticed before.
Let their observations lead the conversation instead of turning every stop into a quiz.
A simple question about what caught their attention can be enough to make the walk feel like an adventure.
Build a comfortable morning
Bring drinking water, consider sun protection, and choose footwear suitable for walking outdoors.
Check the forecast before leaving and adjust your plans to your family's comfort.
You do not have to fill all three hours to make the visit worthwhile.
Choose one activity you particularly want to try, then leave room for whatever interests the children when you arrive.
If you are meeting another household, agree on a specific meeting point rather than simply saying you will find each other at the park.
Take a photograph of your parking location if that helps you remember where you started.
These small decisions can make a family outing feel easier before the first activity even begins. |
A native-plant connection
A related Nature of Things program features Francesca Claverie of Borderlands Restoration Network discussing native-plant restoration.
The presentation is free but requires registration.
A plant-pickup opportunity is also associated with the program, with advance online orders required.
Confirm the presentation's current start time and pickup instructions directly with the Nature Center before planning around them.
If you are interested in native plants, prepare a practical question about your own garden or the conditions where you would plant.
Keep that question specific so you can make useful notes during the discussion.
Keep the curiosity going
The Nature Center offers educational exhibits and programs beyond this single event, including opportunities focused on wildlife and the surrounding environment.
Its broader offerings make it worth checking the calendar again when your family wants another local outing.
For a child who enjoys drawing, suggest making a sketch of something noticed during the morning.
For a child who prefers storytelling, ask them to describe the most surprising part of the visit on the way home.
There is no need to turn the experience into homework or expect everyone to remember the same thing.
You can simply give each person space to share one discovery.
If sensory needs affect your outings, review the Nature Center's sensory guide and contact staff with questions beforehand.
A little preparation leaves more room for curiosity.
Save the October 3 date and plan a visit that suits your household.
The best souvenir may be a new reason to look closely at the desert around you. |

I’d rather skip the crafts and head straight outside!
Lori M.I'd head for the pond first too. We usually see dragonflies around the water there.
Bring extra water, even for a short walk.
The 20-minute walks sound perfect for little legs.
Priya S.Same here. My youngest can handle 20 minutes, especially if there are dragonflies to spot.
We saw so many dragonflies at Veterans Oasis last fall!
Is 9 a.m. Early enough to beat the heat?
Free crafts and nature walks? My kids will love this!
