Chandler's Halloween weekend will start with costumes, candy and an evening in the heart of downtown.

Halloween Spooktacular returns Friday, October 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park: Stage Plaza.

Admission is free, making the event an option for families who want a community celebration before Halloween night.

The destination is 178 E. Commonwealth Avenue, with activities spread through the park.

Pick a parade time before you arrive

The Catwalk Costume Parade is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m.

Guests of all ages can participate, and registration is not required.

Participants must be in costume to walk, so this is the time to bring out the superhero cape or the outfit your child has been planning.

The city encourages guests to choose one parade time so more people have an opportunity to join.

Children ages 12 and younger can receive a glowing souvenir while supplies last.

For parents, choosing a parade time ahead of the visit makes the rest of the evening easier to organize.

You can plan games and candy stops around that moment rather than discovering the parade as it begins.

Use the parade as an anchor for your evening, especially if your group includes children with different interests.

Candy, games and a place for little monsters

Trunk-or-treat stations will offer candy, and visitors are encouraged to bring a bag for their treats.

Carnival activities include Pumpkin Sack Races, Musical Headstones and a Spooky Prize Wheel.

A Little Monsters Zone is designated for children age 5 and younger, with gentler activities for the youngest guests.

The program also includes a DJ dance party, giving families another way to enjoy the evening between stops.

With several activities competing for attention, it may help to let each child choose a favorite before you arrive.

That simple conversation can prevent the outing from becoming a race to complete every attraction.

Leave room for a break if your group needs one, and remember that a good evening does not require staying until closing.

The park celebration is family-oriented, but each child's comfort with costumes and busy spaces will be different.

Talk through what they might see and give them a way to ask for a quieter moment.

Make the arrival part easy

Free parking is listed at three garages east of Arizona Avenue.

The City Hall garage is at Chicago and Washington streets, the Johnathan garage at Buffalo and Washington streets, and the Alexander garage at Boston and Washington streets.

Choose one before leaving home so you have a clear destination beyond the park's address.

Allow time to walk from the garage and find your way to the activity area, particularly if you are aiming for the first parade.

Comfortable footwear matters because the parade route includes both grass and concrete.

Consider how a long costume, oversized shoes or a cumbersome prop will work for walking as well as photographs.

A few small preparations can keep the night enjoyable, from a treat bag to a plan for meeting up if your group separates.

Food, snacks and beverages will be available for purchase, so free admission does not mean every part of the outing is cost-free.

Set your family's spending expectations before children start eyeing extra treats.

If food allergies are part of your planning, inspect candy and ask vendors directly about ingredients.

Check the city's event information again closer to October 30 for any updates to activities or arrangements.

The appeal is a shared neighborhood evening with plenty of ways to participate, whether your family comes for costumes, games or dancing.

Choose your parade, pack the treat bag and give downtown Chandler a place in your Halloween plans.
